Another one of our members of staff Metallurgical Technician Georgina spoke to us about her role at Keighley Laboratories.

Intro: I’m Georgina Brown and I’m a metallurgical technician here at Keighley Laboratories

How long have you worked here?

I joined in August, so 9 months.

What are your duties?

A: So I’m responsible for the aerospace welding, so everything from visuals on the test pieces when they come in to preparing the micros, looking at them and all the bent tests (? I think 0.30) and I do a little bit of general metallurgy as well. But the main areas are aerospace welds

Does your job vary day-to-day

It’s quite varied, it’s quite similar within, obviously the welds, but I still enjoy it, so it’s got to be a bit varied!

Describe working here in 3 words

Collaborative, Supportive and friendly.

What’s your favourite part of the role?

I guess the support, everyone if you come in and you don’t know what your doing is always happy to help.

Do you have prior experience in the industry?

Yes! Before I joined in August, I just graduated from University of Sheffield where I studied Material science and engineering. And then I did a few placements in my summers in labs but nothing that really prepared me that much to be here. So I have had to learn quite alot on the job

Would you say ‘it’s all good learning in lectures but actually being here is different?

Oh! It makes so much difference. Just thinking back your lectures like ‘oh this is what that actually means

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’d like to be working towards my chartership ( I think?? 1.38) and then still learning and progressing as much, absorbing as much as possible, I’ve learnt so much since graduating in such a short period of time, so as much as possible

What are you excited about in your role?

The progressing, more learning, like I said learning from everyone here, who’s got so much knowledge. I just want to absorb as much as possible.
